Choosing A DVD Recorder - Some Thoughts Posted by Administrator
An introduction to DVD recorders
DVD recorders have become increasingly popular over the years since they first appeared on the consumer market in 1999, as people continue to switch away from VCRs to modern optical disk technology. They allow the user to enjoy the high picture quality already offered by DVD players, but like VCRs they allow us to record our favourite television programmes and films and enjoy them whenever is most convenient. Unlike VCRs however, DVD technology reads and records digital media using a laser, rather than magnetic tape, so there is far less wear and tear over time as a result of playback. In addition DVD recorders are a natural progression from VCRs as they offer significantly improved audio and video quality, features such as multilingual subtitling on demand and chapter menus, the ability to access different chapters on disk without needing to rewind or fast forward, and the disks themselves are far more compact and durable than video tape.
Different features of DVD recorders
DVD recorders come either as a computer-based DVD drive integrated into PCs or laptops, or as a standalone unit used with a television as part of a home entertainment system. There are a number of different DVD formats in existence, such as DVD-R (disks that can be recorder to once), DVD-RW (disks which can be erased and re-written to up to 1000 times), DVD+R and DVD+RW (similar to those previously described but a competing format) and DVD+R DL (a write-once disk that has double the capacity of a standard disk). Most DVD recorders can support all these formats. DVD recorders may also include DVD authoring software, allowing control over the layout of menus and chapters, and some will also have a built-in hard disk (DVR) to allow video to be stored in memory on the device itself. Many will also now have an integrated Freeview tuner, and some have a USB connection for playing music and photo files from flash drives.
Some popular brands
DVD recorders are now produced by all the main electrical manufacturers, such as Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, LG , Goodmans, JVC, Hitachi and Proline. There are models available from less than £80, ranging up to above £200 for more fully-featured versions; there are also a number of combination DVD recorders/VCRs which offer great flexibility to people who still want to watch their video tapes.
The benefits of purchasing a DVD recorder
The benefits of purchasing a DVD recorder are many; they provide all the recording features and convenience of a VCR with greatly enhanced quality and durability. There is virtually zero loss of picture quality when copying DVDs, they are capable of storing more than standard VHS tapes, and naturally DVD recorders will also let you listen to your audio CDs. In addition many films are now going straight to DVD and may not be available on VHS at all in the future. With the prices of DVD recorders dropping so fast, buying a DVD player or DVD recorder , has never been so easy
